Journal: What truth does He speak over your identity today?

Welcome to week one of this six week study! This study can be done as an individual but the content on top can be used as a bible study group outline.

What does is actually mean to be called by name? As a young girl, I always told people I was on this earth for a specific reason. I had no idea back then that it was God calling me to do something specific I just knew it would come to me eventually. When I was saved at seventeen, everything fell into place.

For this week’s study, let’s begin by looking at your own name. How is it you got the name you did? What does this name mean to you specifically? Not only do our names represent our identity they also represent our cultural heritage too.

Is there a name or identity you carry with you that you might want to affirm or heal from?

For me, I never liked my name. I hated when people called me Samantha because it reminded me of when my mother was angry with me. Even to this day I sometime cringe when someone calls me by my full name. I realized I had to figure out what God calls me instead. It helped me release the fear associated with being called the very thing I was named at birth.

“You have searched me, LORD, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you, LORD, know it completely.” Psalm 139:1-4(Click here to view this verse in different versions)

This verse is the perfect introduction into our personal identity with Jesus. Once we understand who we are to Him, we can get to know what we were made to do. We can dare to hope and achieve things we thought were impossible. It is also a great introduction into inviting Him in to our hearts so that He may make us aware of the condition of it. God seeks a relationship without out of delight, not duty. Our souls are already in good standing with him (my favorite fact to share) so we can start any time, even if we fail. Even if we are scared.

“But now, this is what the LORD says— he who created you, Jacob, he who formed you, Israel: “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.” Isaiah 43:1

This verse is a perfect reminder for when we forget or become distracted form our goals.

Take a look at the journal prompt- What truth does He speak over your identity today? Spend some time thinking about this. Write down anything that comes to mind.

Join us next week for a continuation of our journey together through self discovery and redemption!

“ Being still meant understanding my condition and what my heart really wanted. I didn't want to deal with any of that. I was no longer as comfortable with my inner self as I was when I was healing in Houston. I built this beautiful inner peace and now I was ignoring it. I don't even know why I was doing it. I was clouded by so much noise that I left a window open for the enemy to sneak in and live in my inner peace. It made it incredibly difficult to want to read my bible. Without my bible time, I was no longer feeding my spirit. It made me weak and vulnerable.” Chapter 12, Rampart Street
